Raymond Joseph and his lottery investigations

Raymond Joseph was among the top three finalists of the Most Resilient Journalist Award and received the award from Free Press Unlimited. Free Press Unlimited is a Netherlands-based organisation and is active in 47 countries. It provides grants to journalism professionals around the world.

Joseph was awarded for revealing the National Lotteries Comission (NLC) corruption scheme. The journalist has been disclosing lotteries details in his articles since 2018. After publishing on the GroundUp platform, Joseph was involved in several court cases, with him and his family receiving constant threats from Lottery and affiliates. Free Press Unlimited judges praised the journalist for “his tenacity in reporting from areas where government accountability is lacking, providing the public with in-depth research stories under difficult circumstances”.

Maria Ressa, a journalist from the Philippines and editor of the Rappler news website, was ranked first in the competition. She was awarded for harsh criticism of the Philippine government, which is known for its oppression of press freedom. The awards were distributed to all contestants during a virtual ceremony on 5 November.
