Powerball Winner Figures in Car Crash

Sometimes luck turns even its favourite favourites away. In 2018, Paul White, 49, who won the Powerball lottery jackpot in 2013, was involved in a terrible car accident and was seriously injured. His girlfriend’s daughter was also killed in the accident. 18-year-old Lauren VanReese of Andover, Minnesota, got thrown from the van, which had rolled multiple times after getting hit by a Ford F-150 pickup. His wife, Kimberly VanReese, 50, was also seriously injured.

The driver of the other car, 30-year-old Nisbany Surit Garcias, was identified by police as the culprit. His blood alcohol content was several times the legal limit. He was charged with 1 count of DUI causing death and 9 counts of DUI causing damage to a person or property.

And now for the good news. A group of scammers from Jamaica were arrested by the police in the same year. More than 90 people from all over the world have been victimised. The perpetrators used a very common scheme – they called their potential victims and told them that they had allegedly won the lottery, asking them to pay a fee. Naturally, once the money was paid, the scammers disappeared from the radar. The suspects have been charged with conspiracy, fraud and money laundering and are still being prosecuted in North Dakota.
